In their first serious test without star scorer Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayer Leverkusen to open the 2022–23 campaign. At 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Dortmund will welcome Patrik Schick and Bayer Leverkusen in the return of Bundesliga action.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+, just as the majority of Bundesliga games this season. If you’re in front of a TV but not a streaming device, you’ll be covered nonetheless because this particular match will also be shown on ABC in the United States.
If Robert Lewandowski and Haaland weren’t involved, Schick would have been the league’s leading scorer in 2017. This season, that has really come to pass as both of the aforementioned players have completely left the Bundesliga, creating the opportunity for a new top scorer to be named for the first time in five years.
Last season, Leverkusen came in third, barely five points behind Borussia Dortmund as both teams chased Bayern Munich for the league championship. Haaland left Dortmund for Manchester City during the summer transfer window, therefore Dortmund will need to find a method to replace the 22 goals he scored in the previous campaign. To help address the gap, they signed Sebastien Haller from Ajax and Karim Adeyemi from RB Salzburg, but it might not be that easy, especially early in the season.
Leverkusen didn’t necessarily sign any marquee players, but their lineup already includes players like Schick, Moussa Diaby, and 20-year-old Paulinho who are reliable attackers. They’re in for another successful campaign as they pursue Borussia Dortmund, and I predict Leverkusen to pull off the unexpected on Matchday 1.
