California’s INGLEWOOD (AP) – In a friendly match on Wednesday night, LA Galaxy defeated Chivas de Guadalajara 2-0 thanks to goals from Dejan Joveljic and Jonathan Pérez.
It served as an introduction to the Leagues Cup competition between MLS and Liga MX clubs that will start next summer and was the first soccer game played at SoFi Stadium, which will host World Cup games in 2026.
All MLS and Liga MX teams will take part in the competition, which will suspend domestic play for one month. The victor will be guaranteed a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League round of 16.
According to LA Galaxy coach Greg Vanney, “I think the leagues are closing in on one another and getting much closer, and I think there’s a lot of respect between the two leagues and the teams now that exists in both leagues, so I see the competition being taken seriously.” “I do believe that the league’s debut the following year is well-timed.” The first MLS vs. Liga MX match of the Leagues Cup Showcase was won by the LA Galaxy, 2-0, on Wednesday night at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
LA Galaxy 2, Chivas 0
On Wednesday (11:15 p.m. ET | ESPN, Univision), LAFC will play Club America at the same stadium, which was selected to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup back in June.
Here are the events that took place as the 2023 Leagues Cup’s expansion approached, which will be accentuated by a summer league break of one month.
In the opening game of the evening, the LA Galaxy defeated Chivas 2-0 thanks to a goal from Dejan Jovelic and a goal from homegrown player Jonathan Perez.
After sprinting onto an Efrain Alvarez corner kick and redirecting it into the goal after 28 minutes, Jovelic continued his recent great MLS form. In the 28th minute, Joveljic, a member of the Serbian national team, extended his left foot to guide an Efrain Alvarez corner kick into the goal. Due to the limited sideline space created by the field-level suites, Alvarez was forced to swing the ball in, and Joveljic beat two Chivas defenders to the near post to give the LA Galaxy the lead.
The game’s best moment was Perez’s goal, which doubled LA’s lead shortly after the hour mark. The 19-year-old received a pass from a teammate outside the penalty area, Samuel Grandsir, and unleashed a long-range shot that outlasted Chivas goalkeeper José Rangel.
LA’s Jonathan Klinsmann made four stops in the goal to help his team hold the scoreless. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez of the LA Galaxy, who is Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, started his professional career at Chivas, played the first 45 minutes before being replaced.
It was an incredible cross, which is why it worked today. Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, a forward with the LA Galaxy, remarked. “You can see it, just touch it,” said Joveljic. He only touched it; he didn’t even like to kick it.
With a well-placed effort from outside the penalty area that beat Ral Rangel to the lunging goalkeeper’s left, Perez made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute.
Naturally, Jonny steals the stage with a fantastic goal. The young player is extraordinary, according to Vanney.
Hernández, a Guadalajara native who began his professional career with Chivas, came close to giving the Galaxy the lead in the first few seconds. After 15 seconds, he intercepted Antonio Briseo’s weak back throw but was unable to take a shot before Rangel made a last-ditch slide tackle.
Early on, Chivas had its own scoring opportunities, the most threatening of which forced Jonathan Klinsmann to make two quick saves in response to Miguel Ponce’s close-range attempt in the 25th minute.
The second game of the doubleheader would feature LAFC and Club América.
LA Galaxy reach agreement to sign Riqui Puig
It has been rumoured for a few days that Riqui Puig won’t be in Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez’s plans for the upcoming campaign.
According to reports, the La Masia product has agreed to sign up with Los Angeles Galaxy.
Barcelona will sell Puig to the MLS team in an effort to free up room in their salary cap and generate money on players who won’t see any action this season.
Puig will sign a three-year contract, and Fabrizio Romano claims that he is already in LA, where he will likely pass his physical.
Puig, a 23-year-old midfielder, was once attempted to be sold by Barcelona, but he insisted on having a chance to earn a spot in the team’s starting lineup.
In spite of joining Barcelona in 2014, he was unable to live up to expectations at Camp Nou.
In the meantime, Neto, Martin Braithwaite, and Samuel Umtiti are also unwanted by the Blaugrana.
